About
BT ISDN
Every
growing business today is learning to appreciate the advantages
of using communications to improve the way it works.
Greater
amounts of information and data are routinely being transferred
between locations. There is a growing need for remote access to
distant offices. The use of flexible working and video conferencing
are changing the way people work together.
Company
Intranets, on-line ordering and fast Internet access are regular
requirements for many companies. They all increase the load on your
current telecoms systems.
ISDN,
the Integrated Services Digital Network, is digital, fast - more
than twice as fast as the fastest modem - and very easy to use.
There are two types of service available; ISDN 2e and ISDN 30.
About
ISDN 2e
ISDN
2e is especially designed for small and medium businesses with a
small switch (PBX). A new ISDN 2e line provides dual capability.
Which means, for example, you could send data to a customer while
simultaneously reading your emails.
ISDN
2e also generates ultra-fast connections for videoconferencing and
is the swiftest way to transfer files, video or voice between sites.
Key
features include;
- Digital
Line high speed connections for clear voice transmission and fast
data transfer
- Fast
Call Set-up - virtually instantaneous call connection, improving
efficiency
- Digital
Path - allowing transmission of voice, data, and text
- Public
dialled service-pay as you use, multi-site high speed communications
at less cost than a private line
- Supplementary
Services - enhancement to existing ISDN service
- PSTN
call rates (nationally) - expediting cost monitoring
- Circuit
switch capacity - to any ISDN and PSTN site, offering maximum
flexibility
ISDN
2e delivers a minimum of two digital exchange lines (or two 64kbit/s
channels) and is available in multiples of two up to a maximum of
eight channels
It provides
digital service to an office switchboard (PBX) and is designed to
meet the needs of smaller organisations and the branch offices of
larger onesWith
ISDN 2e, you will have a digital line with two 64kbit/s channels
to connect your office switchboard to the exchange
With
appropriate ISDN compatible equipment, you can then transmit voice
and data simultaneously and call the Public Switched Digital Network
(PSTN) as normal
An ISDN
2e line box can support up to eight extensions connected to a single
line, any two of which can work simultaneously
Users
will usually have an additional channel (the D channel) for service
signalling back to BT, controlling the signalling and providing
faster connection times.
About
ISDN 30
ISDN
30 is especially designed for medium and large businesses with a
switch (PBX) on their premises, who require voice and data in a
'future-proof' communications system.
Connecting to ISDN 30 is a very cost-effective method of providing
large volumes of lines into a business - ideal for call centres
or offices with growing communications needs.
Key features
include;
- Digital
Lines - high speed connections for clear voice transmission and
fast data transfer
- Fast
Call Set-up - with virtually instantaneous call connection, improving
efficiency
- Digital
Path - allowing the transmission of voice, data and text
- Calling
Line Identity Presentation - identification before answering
- Digital
Private Network Signalling System Interworking (DPNSS) - allowing
interconnection with private networks, easier backup and more
facilities
- Direct
Dialling In (DDI) - providing cost-effective direct phone access
to PABX extension users
- Network
Provided Diversion - automatic transfer of calls to an alternative
point
- Public
dialled service - pay as you use, multi-site high speed communications
at less cost than a private line
- PSTN
call rates (nationally) - allowing cost monitoring
- Circuit
switched - offering maximum flexibility.
ISDN
30 delivers a minimum of eight 64kbit/s channels and can be increased
to any number required. It is the most powerful of the ISDN options
and is designed for large businesses.
With
ISDN 30, you will have a 2Mbit/s connection into your premises from
your local BT telephone exchange. It provides a minimum of 30 independent
64kbit/s channels, plus two further channels - one for synchronisation
and maintenance, the other for service signals. With appropriate
ISDN compatible equipment, you can then transfer voice and data
simultaneously, nationally and internationally, while using the
PSTN as normal.
Finally,
with ISDN 30 you will still be able to subscribe to additional services.
These include Call Diversion, Calling Line Identity (CLI), Sub-addressing,
Diverse Routing, Out of Area Service, PromptCare maintenance, and
the option of BT's unique four hour TotalCare protection.
When
using ISDN, with additional equipment, which Westlake can provide,
a wide range of applications can be run, such as;
- File
transfer between computers, requiring either an internal ISDN
card or a terminal adaptor, plus the relevant software
- Video
conferencing, via a dedicated unit or additional PC-based equipment
- an internal ISDN card, camera, handset and software
- Access
the office network from home with an ISDN LAN access card, with
a bridge router in the office network ISDN faxes, which work to
Group 4 speed - capable of sending an A4 sheet in 3 seconds.
