Short-Haul Data
Services are BT's broadband point-to-point data services designed
to extend Local Area Networks and Storage Area Networks between
offices and business sites up to 25kms apart. SHDS have been providing
reliable, cost effective Local Area Network (LAN) interconnectivity
for many of the UK's leading financial, commercial and Government
institutions for over fifteen years.
Product Summary
Short Haul Data
Services (SHDS) are point to point digital circuits, provided over
dedicated optical fibres. The Network Terminating Equipment (NTE)
connected to the ends of these fibres, provides the interface appropriate
to customer requirements and the service being provided. SHDS are
offered in a range of bandwidth options, from 4Mbit/s to 40 Gigabit/s,
so the speed of the service is matched to the speed of your Local
Area Network.
Features

Cost effective
- increase efficiency by linking your sites electronically, Seamless
- your LANs appear as one, Economical - no bandwidth restrictions,
Responsive - your applications will operate in exactly the same
way regardless of where you are located, Secure - discrete fibre-based
connectivity between your sites, Reliable - selected services are
continuously monitored by BT.
SMDS (Switched
Multi-Megabit Data Services)
SMDS is BT Ignite's
market leading any-to-any connectionless data service. SMDS provides
reliable, cost effective support for the mission critical applications
of many of the UK's leading financial, commercial and government
institutions, with access speeds ranging from 0.2Mbit/s to 25Mbit/s.
The service is ideal for organisations that have geographically
dispersed sites, with an increasing use of data applications, requiring
a high quality, flexible and robust service.
Product Summary
SMDS is delivered
as a single physical access connection between the customer site
and BT's network. To enable communication between sites, each site
must be connected to the network. SMDS is connectionless so it is
not necessary to create virtual circuits between sites before information
can be shared. Instead, the SMDS addressing feature looks at the
destination address of information being transmitted from one site
and routes it across the network to the destination site. Each access
circuit requires a router to interface with the BT Network Terminating
Equipment (NTE).
Features
& Benefits
Choice of 2,
8, 34, 45, 140, 155 or 622 Mbit/s bandwidths, Interface options
that include X.21.G.703 and STM1, High quality transmission, Performance
and reliability, Nationwide coverage.
IP Enabled
Cellstream/Framestream
Our Cell stream
and Frame stream products already carry substantial levels of IP
traffic. "IP enabling" creates a new class of service
for FrameStream, CellStream and SMDS, to complement our traditional
grades of service, whilst bringing the enhanced functionality of
IP switching.
Product Summary
Customers will
purchase an IP class of PVC, to link each site directly to the IP
(MPLS) network. This PVC will carry IP packets only, via the IP
network, to any other IP-enabled site (regardless of whether that
destination site is a FrameStream, CellStream, SMDS or dial site).
Customers will be able to simultaneously send information over their
existing network service.
Features

Gradual migration
to IP - create an IP VPN alongside your existing network, Integrated
dial-up access option, Cost-effective - frees up valuable PVC bandwidth,
Inter-service Connectivity - intercommunication regardless of network
service, Scalable - from 56kbs to 622Mbs, Resilient - host applications
and content at distributed sites, Support for non-IP applications
- continue to run applications over your traditional network.
IP Clear
IP-Clear allows
customers to create IP VPNs over BT Ignite's MPLS IP network. Ideal
for Corporate customers looking to link their geographically dispersed
sites to exchange information, IP Clear offers secure information
exchange and integrated dial access to the corporate network. What's
more, IP Clear will seamlessly inter-work with IP-enabled CellStream,
IP-enabled FrameStream and IP-enabled SMDS, allowing customers to
create networks based on a mixture of services, or migrate gradually
to IP from more traditional services.
Product Summary
IP Clear will
inter-work with IP Dial, IP-enabled CellStream, IP-enabled FrameStream
and IP-enabled SMDS (when launched). Access to the IP VPN can be
via an IP Clear access, an IP-enabled FrameStream or CellStream
access, a dial access or an IP-enabled SMDS CUG. These sites will
all be able to exchange IP traffic via an IP VPN - regardless of
access type. Hence IP-enabled FrameStream sites will be able to
communicate with IP-enabled SMDS sites, or IP Clear sites in a seamless
environment.
Features
& Benefits
Any-to-any connectivity

to IP Clear.
BTnet MetroVPN
IP networking
is becoming a key part in organisational strategy. BTnet metroVPN
is a new IP service under the Systems Business (SB) licence. BTnet
metroVPN is a regional service suitable for county or city based
Government departments requiring a secure Intranet service. The
product will initially be targeted at customers where the primary
requirement is to communicate with other sites within a geographically
constrained regional or "Metropolitan" area, where BTnet
metroVPN provides the customer with a secure, low cost, managed
IP data network service.
Product Summary
BTnet metroVPN
provides the customer with the option of fixed or dial access to
the VPN, which can then be divided into a number of Closed User
Groups. CUGs effectively allow you to create a number of mini virtual
private networks within an IP network. BTnet metroVPN's are either
Single Service Point or Regional; and every VPN must be defined
according to one of these two criteria. The VPN can also be used
to provide a secure link for business partners, suppliers, and clients
of the customer, reducing costs and most importantly improving internal
and external communication links. This service is an IP Transport
service and as such will only support IP data traffic. When new
capabilities such as Voice-over IP become available, Btnet metroVPN
will support such applications.
